Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain
Wednesday, January 1, 2014

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, and has the highest peak in Spain - Mount Teide, elevation 3718m. It is also the most populated island, having nearly 1 million people. It was also the last island to be conquered by the Spanish in 15th century, due to fierce resistance from native Guanche warriors.

Tenerife is a green island covered by banana plantations and other agriculture, in addition to residential, tourist developments, and a university dating from the 1500's. We took a drive to Mount Teide National Park to view its vast volcanic landscape, totally barren and crowned by white snow on top of Mount Teide. The island is quite beautiful, the upper plateaus are wild and primordial.
