We took a tour of Cesar Manrique's unique cultural creations on Lanzarote Island. Cesar Manrique was an artist and architect whose imprint are found in many places in the Canary Islands. He grew up in Lanzarote and had a special affinity for the stark, arid volcanic landscape here. His passion for unifying nature and culture in creative ways is seen in each of his works we visited.

Cesar Manrique's Cactus Garden was build to mimic a volcanic crater, and each of the small buildings inside resemble a volcano. His Jameos del Agua was built inside volcanic lava caves with subterranean lakes. Unlike other tourist attractions featuring caves, Jameos del Agua is particularly delightful due to the many man-made enhancements to the natural cave structures, making the place resemble a stylish spa and club. Finally, the Cesar Manrique Foundation is a house he lived in for decades, where his unique design of subterranean living spaces using natural volcanic caves are refreshing and beautiful.
