Amalfi Coast

Praiano, Italy
Tuesday, June 8, 2004

We finished our Mediterranean cruise trip, returned to Venice, then took a train to Naples. There we transferred by regional rail to Sorrento, where we took a bus to the Amalfi Coast. This is a very rugged coastline with limestone cliffs everywhere, beautiful orchards and gardens hanging precariously on the slopes, ruins of Arab bastions dot the coastline. We stayed in the town of Praiano, explored the shoreline on the walking trails and down to the beach. It was low season and pretty quiet. The hotel we stayed at in Praiano had beautiful terraces outside the guestrooms providing glorious views. We then moved to Amalfi which had a massive, richly ornamented cathedral and a bustling shopping district near the port.
