Bats!

Green Grotto, Saint Ann, Jamaica
Saturday, February 19, 2011

We went on an excursion to St Ann, an area east of Montego Bay. Here we toured the Green Grotto Caves, a limestone cavern system near the north sea shore of the island. Our guide Chad was a humorous young man that teased us "yellow" people (Chinese) quite a lot, which was in good fun. We saw lots and lots of bats in these caverns, flying around as we listened to the guide talk about the place. Supposedly the Spanish governor of Jamaica hid in these caves and eventually fled to Cuba when the English took over the island in the 1600's. There were deep underground lakes, narrow passage ways, and many entry/exists to the cave system. One of the cavernous spaces inside was even used as a dance club at one time!

After this we crossed the highway to have lunch at a roadside restaurant serving jerk chicken and jerk pork. It's a most relaxing place with a bar under a large canopy of thatched roof, where we drank beer amid the wonderful sea breezes.
