A traditional Chinese river port, Guangzhou (Canton) looked familiar. We visited Shamian Island with its 19th century colonial mansions, and sampled dim sum that featured long segmented sea creatures resembling lobsters.
The next 2 days we traveled through the rugged mountains to the northeast populated by the Hakka people around the Tingjiang watershed, then we took a bus to Amoy (Xiamen), the prosperous sea port.
