Puerto Iguazu

Puerto Iguazu, Argentina
Tuesday, January 7, 2003

We traveled to the world famous Iguacu Falls, one of the three most celebrated in the world. The bus from Sao Paulo took us through the Sao Paulo state countryside, a highly productive agricultural area populated by many European immigrants, especially Polish and Ukrainians. Once in Foz do Iguacu, the town right on the border between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, we settled into fairly modern hotel. The town is quite large, unlike the little towns in the other two countries across the border. We saw the falls from the Brazilian side, then crossed into Argentina to see it too. It was absolutely spectacular, there are are hundreds of strands of torrents falling everywhere, clouds of swifts rapidly fly in and out of their nests right below the falls. The tropical heat was a bit intense, and I ended up with a little infection on the leg from a mosquito bite.

The return trip took us by bus to Curitiba, a city with a polish majority famous in my urban planning textbooks as the example of a well-planned, well-run city. To save time we transferred to a flight that took us back to Rio.
