We visited the Wallowa Mountains in northeastern Oregon, approaching Hells Canyon along the Idaho border, reputed the deepest canyon in the US. The Wallowa Mountains soar to over 10,000 feet, it's a beautiful region with many great vistas but few paved roads in the back country. The rugged landscape can feel a bit sinister because of the lack of settlement.
Heading back we drove along the Columbia River, mostly on the Oregon side that is more developed. It is a mighty river and the Columbia River Gorge area have many rugged bluffs along the banks. We came across frozen waterfalls and great vistas. A bit more driving take us to Portland, then back to Seattle to catch our flight.
