I got my dad to take me to the great wall on a day trip. I picked the Simatai section, a very wild and less touristed one. My dad's driver couldn't find the way a few times, confused by road signs put up by local villagers in efforts to collect tolls. Eventually he found the right way. There was a cable car to take you almost up to the wall, so my dad and step-mom didn't have to hike a lot. The walls were less restored and looked somewhat like a ruin. The sections that are in good shape are open to tourists, the rest are closed off. This is a wonderful place, I love scampering on and off the various towers, going up and down the ridges and sags, sometime very steeply. My dad tried to catch up.View of the distant mountains like waves and the wall like a long string riding the waves is magnificent.
