We drove south across Wyoming's desert country, stopping at Thermopolis to take a free soak in the hot springs, then stopped at South Pass, a wind-swept, desolate stretch of road. This was the spot where emigrants crossed the continental divide enroute to the riches of Oregon and California back in the 1800's. Back in Salt Lake City, we went to the shores of the Great Salt Lake. This is truly a desert environment, with brilliant sun light shining on the huge barren hills surrounding the lake, whose waters feel translucent and glittery. Irrigated yellow-green croplands dot the overwhelmingly brown land, a bit like Tibet, which I visited a number of years later.
